Aerospace Engineering
Unit 2.3 Understandings, Knowledge, Skills, and Essential Questions.
Understandings
Knowledge and Skills
It is expected that students will:
Essential Questions
Understandings
- The capabilities and limitations of the human body need to be understood by pilots, crews, and aerospace engineers.
- The human body consists of systems that work together to ensure functionality and life.
- An aerospace engineer considers the human interaction with the machine for more effective designs.
- Extreme environments and forces can harm or kill a human.
Knowledge and Skills
It is expected that students will:
- Describe common human body systems and their functions.
- Recognize the formula for distance with respect to time and acceleration.
- List common factors contribute to an aircraft accident.
- Measure human vision quality such as acuity, astigmatism, color vision perception, depth perception and peripheral vision field.
- Analyze how human factors affect aerospace system design.
- Infer reaction time through indirect measurements.
- Analyze an aircraft accident to determine likely causes.
Essential Questions
- How do the human limitations of perception impact aircraft design?
- How does the human eye perceive the environment?
- How can your reaction time be improved?
- What are common causes of aircraft accidents?
Weekly Outline 4/30-5/4

Weekly Outline 5/7-5/11
Monday - Unit 2.3Activity:
-Review Visual Perception activity and discuss how limitations to human perception impact aircraft design. -Discuss reaction time and how it relates to inputs and outputs. -Complete Activity 2.3.2 Reaction Time. HW: Complete Conclusion questions. |
Tuesday - Unit 2.3Complete reaction time activity 2.3.2
|
Wed - Unit 2.3Warm-up:
Watch Physiology of Flight: Flying and Hypoxia. Activity: -Complete Activity 2.3.4 Build a Block where students have to describe how to build an object that their partner can not see. HW: Complete conclusion questions. |
Thursday - Unit 2.3Activity:

Friday - Unit 2.3Activity:
Today we will complete a flight from Colorado Springs municipal airport (KCOS) to Denver International Airport (VOR frequency 117.9). We will all take off at the same time and race to Denver. The first person to LAND SAFELY on one of the runways at DIA wins. This activity will be completed with ungloved hands, and we will time how long it takes you to complete the task. Then we will repeat it with a gloved hand. |
Weekly Outline 5/14-5/18
